Lactoferrin
What is Lactoferrin?
I guess you think of two words when you hear “lactoferrin.” Milk (lactose) and iron. Interestingly enough, it wouldn’t be that far-fetched.
Lactoferrin is a protein whose main biological function is to bind and transport iron, an essential mineral that helps hemoglobin carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body
It is also known from breast milk ( colostrum). The glycoprotein has come into the focus of science because it is believed to be responsible for the fact that breastfeeding children have fewer infections, develop fewer allergies, and have a stronger immune system.
Its main biological function is to help bind and transport iron, an essential mineral that helps hemoglobin carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. No matter how much iron is in your body, if it can’t be retained and utilized, you could end up deficient. You may eat lots of green, leafy vegetables, and / or lean red meat, which are natural sources of iron but it does not mean your body can absorb or process it.
What can I do if my body does not use iron properly?
Lactoferrin can help address this dilemma by supporting the body’s natural delivery system, helping the body to better utilize and balance the iron* Studies have shown that because lactoferrin is naturally iron-binding, it has a positive effect on iron absorption, which in turn increases blood iron levels.
Iron deficiency can result in anemia, fatigue, and poor circulation, as well as many other physical discomforts. Women are most vulnerable to iron deficiency and depletion, along with people who are very active.? Lactoferrin is a great solution.
Lactoferrin – humans’ oldest friend – from birth.
Newborn animals are fed with mother’s milk just like humans. The first milk taken from the mother within 24 to 48 hours is called colostrum. This yellowish transparent milk contains many antibodies (including lactoferrin) in addition to growth substances.
Lactoferrin and colostrum therefore has many advantages:
- Strengthens the intestinal flora
- Protects the intestinal wall
- For a good balance between useful and unfavorable bacteria in the intestine
- Supports and stimulates the immune system
- Helps to improve the optimized iron content in the blood
Food offers us more than just the satisfaction of hunger and appetite. It provides the organism with essential nutrients. But even an averagely healthy diet is hardly sufficient to supply the body with what it actually needs for well-being. This is where dietary supplements come into play.
Why Lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is also gentle on the digestive system, therefore supporting the gastrointestinal tract and all its functions. Rather than adding elemental iron – the kind you find in virtually every iron supplement on the market – which has been shown to cause intestinal inflammation, lactoferrin helps the body absorb what is already there without upsetting the stomach. It has been shown in clinical research to be more bioavailable, allowing for more efficient absorption of iron, compared to other iron sources.
Which Lactoferrin do you recommend?
We recommend Lactoferrin from Nikken because it improves the formulation by four organic ingredients: organic inulin, organic Rhodiola, organic ginger, and organic turmeric
Organic inulin, organic ginger, organic turmeric, and organic Rhodiola work in conjunction with lactoferrin to provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory features that can help support overall well-being.
For whom is it recommended?
Lactoferrin is particularly recommended for anyone who has been taking iron supplements for a long time and whose levels are not improving.
The body needs iron for blood formation. However, it is not always easy to obtain an adequate supply of this essential trace element: it is estimated that 30 to 50 percent of people worldwide suffer from the reduced supply. In Europe, 10 to 15 percent of children are said to be affected.
Lactoferrin can improve usability but is not itself an iron supplier.
How does this support lactoferrin?
However, this is not lactoferrin’s only role within the body. Its iron-binding properties give it several secondary functions:
- Boost your immune system. Lactoferrin is also essential in providing an increased defense for your immune system. Lactoferrin deprives unwanted bacteria in the body from the nutrients they need to continue spreading and is able to boost your body with beneficial antioxidants, enhance oxygenation of the tissues, and improve white blood cell health.
- The immune protein is the focus of various scientific studies. Lactoferrin has been shown to have many properties, particularly those related to the function of the immune system:
- As part of the immune system, it influences inflammatory regulation,
- it has antimicrobial properties
- Lactoferrin has a direct influence on the course of an inflammation
- regulates the immune system
- and shows anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics
An optimal iron supply can strengthen a weak immune system.
- Clear skin. If you are having trouble maintaining healthy or clear skin, lactoferrin also works at reducing acne activity and preventing breakouts.
What does lactoferrin in stool indicate?
Lactoferrin is an iron-binding glycoprotein with antibacterial effect. As a component of the non-specific defence it can be detected in various secretions, including tear fluid, saliva and breast milk. Lactoferrin is also present in the intestinal mucus.
An increase in the lactoferrin concentration in the stool may, therefore, be an indication of an inflammation of the intestinal mucosa.
what is lactoferrin in breast milk?
Breast milk contains up to 15% lactoferrin (cow’s milk contains only 0.2 grams of lactoferrin per liter).
For some years it has been possible to produce high-dose lactoferrin preparations (from cow’s milk) that can be taken to supplement the lactoferrin produced by the body itself.
